Chief Medical Residents 2010-2011

The Chief Medical Residents are a major force on the medical service. In addition to accomplishing the miracles of scheduling and conferences, they are an invaluable resource for teaching, conducting rounds, disseminating medical literature and overseeing all educational aspects of the program. Through the initiatives of the Chief Medical Residents, new programs are proposed and accomplished.

Lama Azar, M.D.

Hometown: Beirut, Lebanon

Medical School: Saint-Joseph University, Beirut, Lebanon

Career Plans: Rheumatology Fellowship, Cleveland Clinic

"The years 2007-2010 will always be remembered as my Beth Israel years!  It is not an exaggeration to say that when I started residency here 3 years ago or so, life as I knew it was over.  I changed all my codes: new country code, new zip code, new language codes, new friends and neighbors, new job and responsibilities... and it all seemed oddly simple and exciting here at BI.  Working with people from all corners of the world, who have different experiences and perspectives, in an atmosphere of respect, support and friendship, as well as academic excellence and rigor... was such an enriching experience and a great incentive for me to learn and develop, seek accomplishment and pursue career plans with serenity and ease."

David Beyda, M.D.

Hometown: Great Neck, New York

Medical School: Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv, Israel

Career Plans:  Gastroenterology Fellowship, Long Island College Hospital

“Matching at Beth Israel was by far the best residency I could have asked for.  From almost day 1 I felt a very close bond with my fellow interns and residents, which continues to grow to this day.  Beyond the collegial feel of BI is the fantastic medical care we deliver and medical knowledge I learned here.  The opportunies to learn are all around us, from daily interactions with attendings and consults on the floors, to grand rounds, morning reports, and elective months.  The attendings here care for both their patients and their residents, and I am thrilled to be a Chief Resident this year to help continue that approach to medical training."

Arkady Broder, M.D.

Hometown: Odessa, Ukraine

Medical School: Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York

Career Plans:  Gastroenterology Fellowship, Beth Israel Medical Center

"Beth Israel was a perfect match for me.  As a medical student at Albert Einstein I was able to my sub-internship at Beth Israel.  My experience was excellent and highlighted by my interactions with Beth Israel's bright and motivated residents, kind and involved attendings, and a very diverse patient population.  This motivated me to apply and eventually match at the Beth Israel Sabbath residency program.  After 3 years of superb training, I decided to stay on as a Chief Resident and Gastroenterology fellow.  The continued support from our attendings, many academic opportunites, and the comradery of my colleagues has made my time here a great learning and living experience!"

Anupama Paranandi, D.O.

Hometown: Long Island, New York

Medical School: New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, New York

Career Plans: Infectious Disease Fellowship, Tufts University

"My experience at Beth Israel has been more expansive than I ever expected.  In terms of medical experience, I have had a great education, seeing patients from varied cultural backgrounds with a wide range of pathology.  Additionally, I have had constant support from the program leadership in terms of my career goals in Infectious Disease.  On a more personal level, I have met a wonderful set of people who are warm and generous.  I am confident that my friendships from Beth Israel will last a lifetime.  Being a part of the Beth Israel family has been truly rewarding, one of the best decisions I have ever made."

Marina Shcherba, D.O.

Hometown: Tashkent, Uzbekistan

Medical School: University of Medicine and Denistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), New Jersery

Career Plans: Hematology/Oncology Fellowship, Albert Einstein College of Medicine

"After finishing medical school in New Jersey, I knew I wanted to come back to New York.  I spent one month at Beth Israel as a medical student rotating through the Endocrine Department and decided I wanted to join the BI family.  It was the collegiality of the residents and enthusiam of the faculty that attracted me at that time.  That first impression has not changed over the last 3 years.  As a resident I found my peers to be selfless, kind, hard-working, yet fun-loving, well rounded and highly accomplished.  We have not only worked together, but challenged each other and matured into lifelong learners and excellent physicians.  Remembering a famous quote that "Life's challenges are not supposed to paralyze you, they are supposed to help you discover who you are", I am looking forward to an exciting, yet challenging, year as Chief Resident."
