Chief Medical Residents 2011-2012

The Chief Medical Residents are a major force in the residency training program. In addition to accomplishing the miracles of scheduling and conferences, they are an invaluable resource for teaching, conducting rounds, disseminating medical literature and overseeing all administrative and educational aspects of the program. Through the initiatives of the Chief Medical Residents, new programs are proposed and accomplished.

Andrew Korman, M.D.
Hometown: Springfield, New Jersey
Medical School: Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv, Israel
Career Plans: Gastroenterology Fellowship at Beth Israel Medical Center

My first experience at Beth Israel was during a GI elective while a 4th year medical student. Immediately I was regarded as a member of the BI family and treated with upmost respect. Since the beginning of my intern year I have developed priceless friendships with many of my peers and have been exposed to innumerable teaching opportunities. Becoming one of the chief medical residents was certainly a great honor and my excitement for my upcoming fellowship in Gastroenterology at BI is without description.

Yuichi Shimada, M.D.
Hometown: Kawagoe, Japan
Medical School: University of Tokyo
Career Plans:  Cardiology Fellowship, Brigham and Women's Hospital Boston, MA

I came all the way from Tokyo to the US to become a competent physician-researcher in cardiology. It was one of the wisest decisions in my life that I chose Beth Israel for my residency training. In this supportive environment that provides superb clinical training, I gained abundant knowledge and experience to feel comfortable taking care of patients with common medical diseases. In addition, thanks to the great mentorship for clinical research, I will be publishing a total of 12 papers (9 as the first author) by the end of my chief year. I am most thankful to the Program Directors and Coordinators that allowed me to gain credits for the internet-based/part time Master of Public Health program at Johns Hopkins during my chief year and helped me substantially to get a position in cardiology. I cannot recommend this program highly enough for the incoming interns and medical students who might be interested in this program.

Amy Esposito, M.D.
Hometown: Albany, New York
Medical School: Albany Medical College, NY

After an undergraduate degree in history, I completed the pre-med post-baccalaureate program at Columbia University. I attended medical school in my hometown of Albany and then returned to NYC for residency at Beth Israel.  The Beth Israel community has been warm and welcoming. I am honored to be a chief resident here.

 Jonathan Mazurek, M.D.
Hometown: Great Neck, New York
Medical School: Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, New York
Career Plans:Gastroenterology Fellowship at Beth Israel Medical Center

My first experience at Beth Israel was as a fourth year medical student rotating through the Division of Digestive Diseases. As a result of that rotation I decided to apply, and I eventually matched in the Beth Israel Sabbath residency program. My three years of residency provided me with superb training and I formed wonderful relationships with my colleagues that will undoubtedly last. I am excited about the opportunity to serve as a chief resident for this coming year and to ultimately remain here, at Beth Israel, for my gastroenterology fellowship!

Georges Ephrem, M.D.
Hometown: Sirayta, Lebanon
Medical School: American University of Beirut, Beirut, Lebanon
Career Plans:Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship, North Shore-LIJ

Matching for residency in the US was a great leap into the unknown for me, but I am so grateful that I landed at BI! Despite being far away from my country and my family, the wonderful people I had the chance to work with created an atmosphere of camaraderie, support and respect that made my residency years a warm and wonderful experience. The illustrious faculty I worked with, the compassionate patient care I provided, the medical knowledge I garnered, and the opportunities that were made available for me, including pursuing a Masters of Science in Clinical Research, clearly show how well BI prepared me for the future. Being a part of the BI family was one of the best decisions I have ever made and I am looking forward to an exciting, yet challenging, year as Chief Resident!
