Protocol for Contacting Medical Attending Physicians
If the patient has a voluntary private attending, that private attending should be contacted.
If the patient is or will be a hospitalist service patient, use the following protocol:
Weekdays from 6am Monday through 8pm Friday: 24/7 availability
A. If the patient has a bed assignment or is already an inpatient:
The hospitalist assigned to that WARD should be contacted directly. The hospitalist’s “Week at a Glance” Document, which can be viewed in an above link is the gold standard schedule document for hospitalist coverage and ward assignment and should be referenced to determine the correct attending to contact.
*If the ward hospitalist cannot be reached, the on call hospitalist should be paged at 18006
B. If the patient does not have a bed assigned (and is either in the ED or at another hospital)
The on call hospitalist should be paged at 18006 as also seen on “Week at a Glance”
Weekends from 8pm Friday to 6am Monday:
A. If the patient has a bed assignment or is already an inpatient:
Consult the hospitalist “Week at a Glance” document on website. At the top of this document, the names of the hospitalists covering particular floors for the weekend are listed. The hospitalist covering the ward the patient is on or going to should be called. (note—this is NOT the 18006 beeper)
*If the covering hospitalist cannot be reached, the on call hospitalist should be paged at 18006
B. If the patient does not have a bed assigned (and is either in the ED or at another hospital)
- Page the on call hospitalist at 18006
If the on call hospitalist cannot be reached, then one of the covering hospitalists listed on the “Week at a Glance” document should be paged
MED CONSULT: Monday 6am through Friday 8pm: 24/7 availability
